College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario

The College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) is the governing body for audiologists and speech-language pathologists in Ontario. The Office of the Fairness Commissioner (OFC) oversees the registration practices of the college to ensure that they are transparent, objective, impartial and fair for anyone who wants to practise as an audiologist or a speech-language pathologist in this province.

In 2009, the CASLPO submitted its first-ever Fair Registrations Practices (FRP) Report, covering 2008, to the OFC. Since then, it has also submitted an FRP Report covering 2009 and its first audit of registration practices.

During 2009 - 2010, the OFC monitored developments related to the registration practices of the CASLPO:

Mentored Practice: The CASLPO has required applicants to complete six months of mentored practice in Ontario, if they have less than two years of professional practice. The Agreement on Internal Trade requires removing this mentorship for applicants from provinces outside Ontario. The CASLPO asked that this mentorship be kept (as an exception under the AIT), but the request was denied. This denial means that the mentorship requirement must be removed for individuals in other provinces and territories, but not for Ontario graduates or internationally trained individuals.
