About the Commissioner
The new Exemplary Practices Database is a collection of excellent licensing practices used by Ontario regulators.
It is mainly for the staff of the regulatory bodies for self-regulated professions in Ontario. It is also available to the public.
Since 2007, the Office of the Fairness Commissioner has challenged both regulators and governments to address barriers to professional licensing, with qualified success.
Progress has not been uniform. Some regulators have made more improvements than others. All could do more to address ongoing challenges related to the complexity, length and cost of the licensing process. The provincial and federal governments also have an important role to play in promoting fair access.
In 2011-12, the OFC undertook the first comprehensive assessment of regulators' registration practices ever done in Canada.
