College of Denturists of Ontario

The College of Denturists of Ontario (CDO) is the governing body for denturists in Ontario. The Office of the Fairness Commissioner (OFC) oversees the registration practices of the college to ensure that they are transparent, objective, impartial and fair for anyone who wants to practise as a denturist in this province.

The College of Denturists of Ontario falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The OFC does not assess credentials, handle complaints or intervene in particular cases. Our mandate is one of systemic change. Please contact the CDO for further information about your ability to practise as a denturist in Ontario.

Vigilance and Action

After the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care and the Fairness Commissioner expressed significant concerns about the college’s decisions and actions, the government of Ontario appointed a supervisor to oversee the college in March 2012.

It was the first time this had ever happened in Canada.

The Minister required the college to improve in six key areas:

  • entry-to-practice exams
  • financial oversight and controls
  • re-building of trust and relationships
  • operating by-laws
  • registration and quality assurance requirements and regulations
  • governance

In September 2013, the Minister was satisfied with the progress made by the college.

It is no longer under supervision.

The OFC is working with the college and will assess its registration practices in spring 2014.
