College of DENTAL TECHNOLOGISTS of Ontario

Description

This practice is of interest to regulators that conduct examinations and/or monitor examinations of qualifications assessment agencies.

The College of Dental Technologists of Ontario (CDTO) uses:

  • a blind approach for marking all exams (Names are not used, and each applicant is assigned a number.)

  • a conflict-of-interest process (For example, markers are not present in the room during any exam.)

  • carefully selected markers

  • a marking guide

  • a consistent approach to orienting applicants, markers and exam supervisors about the CDTO's expectations and protocols

  • a process to log applicants` concerns during the administration of the exam to ensure markers are well informed

  • a peer review approach for marking practical exams (Three members in a team evaluate projects independently. If they disagree, another three-member team marks the exam to double check the results. )

  • on-site presence of CDTO staff during exams to ensure exam procedures are followed

  • outside, independent review of the exam after it is administered

Value to Regulator

  • Helps to ensure adherence to published criteria, policies and procedures.
  • Helps to ensure quality of qualifications assessment decisions. Assessment tools and processes measure what they intend to measure and yield consistent results.
  • Helps to improve communication with applicants.
  • Helps to prevent potential for unintended or differential impact on non-traditional applicants.

Value for Applicants

  • Helps applicants better understand assessment of qualifications process and results of assessment.
